Barcelona's principle international airport is El Prat (BCN) and it is one of southern Europe's main airport hubs with excellent connections to and from the city centre. Find out which airlines use BCN here. More general details can be found on the airport homepage.
Budget airlines also fly to the following airports outside of Barcelona. Please note: it is strongly recommended to check the local transportation to and from Barcelona city centre before making a booking.
The Spanish rail service is called RENFE. There is a good network throughout mainland Spain and several international routes available to and from Barcelona.
We approached RENFE to negotiate a conference package for reduced fares for The EMBO Meeting participants - small reductions were only available on full price fares, better discounts can be found online for individual travellers and groups. Therefore we recommend participants to check online for the latest offers and advance booking options.
RENFE website is predominantly in Spanish or Catalan, the limited English language section can be found here.
International routes to and from Barcelona include Paris, Montpellier, Zürich, Bern and Milan. More details can be found here.
Travelling to Spain is relatively easy however if you need a visa to enter Spain, you must apply in person at the Spanish Consulate / Embassy in your home country at least three months before the intended date of travel. The documents you need vary depending on where you are from.
Please check the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs web site for more details about visa requirements.
Search for your local Spanish Consulate / Embassy here.
A number of travel grants may be offered to Masters and PhD students whose abstract submission for poster presentation is successful. The grants will be limited to those students from countries with a less developed research infrastructure. Further details will follow.
